Shrivenham MOD/Industry Workshop 2011
Transforming defence: Meeting challenges and seizing opportunities
The annual Shrivenham workshops provide a unique and confidential forum for senior influencers and decision makers from across UK defence to discuss and debate the key challenges in defence acquisition. The workshop outputs are subsequently used to recommend positive and practical actions to address the key issues.
Sponsored by both DCDS (Cap) and the Chief of Defence Materiel (CDM), the Shrivenham MOD/Industry Workshop 2011, the sixth in the series, focused on defence transformation and the related implications for both the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) and defence industry.
Attended by over 160 senior defence leaders, the 2011 workshop comprised both plenary and facilitated syndicate sessions, to allow in-depth discussion of both the challenges and, importantly, the actions to help address them:
-
a selection of high-profile speakers from the MOD, industry and wider government shared their perspectives on defence transformation
-
the highly focused syndicate sessions, each generating actions and recommendations that will inform the defence transformation agenda in 2012, focused on five key areas:
-
Making the MOD's new structures work
-
Making DE&S and industry fit for the future
-
Transitioning to new behaviours and ways of working
-
Understanding the national cost base of defence and seizing the opportunity to drive out costs
-
Rethinking approaches to outsourcing/service provision whilst maintaining operational agility.
Progress from the 2010 workshop was also reviewed (themes explored included: acquisition costs in non-equipment areas; long-term value across industry sectors; affordable and sustainable operational capability; maximising returns of research and technology investment across defence and security; and exports and sovereignty).
The Shrivenham workshops are led by the MOD, designed and facilitated by PA Consulting Group and sponsored by BAE Systems.
